How it all started...
The history of Cold Springs Global Methodist Church is deeply tied to the natural spring that gave the church its name. As early as the 1830s, weary travelers along Fayetteville Road stopped at “Cold Springs Campground” to rest, water their horses, and refresh themselves with the cool spring water. Over time, this simple stopover became a place of serenity and spiritual renewal. Even today, the spring continues to attract people from near and far, who come for its pure, refreshing water, said to be free of chemicals and rich in minerals. The spring has remained a constant presence for generations, symbolizing both continuity and community.
Throughout its history, the spring has weathered storms and change but has continued to serve as a vital gathering place. During Hurricane Hugo in 1989, when power outages left many without water, the spring became a lifeline for the community. The church has since developed the site with picnic shelters, steps, paved roads, and even a fire pit, while maintaining its natural beauty and historic value. It has been a place of baptisms, weddings, and countless gatherings, embodying a sense of peace, history, and spiritual connection. Members and visitors alike find the site to be both a practical resource and a symbol of God’s presence in nature.
The church itself was founded in 1861, born out of the revivals and camp meetings held at the spring. Families would travel by wagon each August, set up tents, and spend days worshiping under an open-air brush arbor. These gatherings emphasized faith, music, and fellowship, providing spiritual nourishment and laying the foundation for the organized church. A permanent building followed in 1868, but the legacy of the brush arbor meetings continues to shape the congregation’s identity. Today, Cold Springs Global Methodist Church honors this heritage while continuing to serve its community, carrying forward the spirit of its forefathers through worship, service, and fellowship to help others find everlasting refreshment for their souls in the living water of Jesus Christ.
